| The MPPOA firmly believes that education and training are essential to achieve the goal of professionalism for all law enforcement officers, so adequate training of police officers is a vital concern of the MPPOA.
The Association's accomplishments include:
|
-
As early as 1936, the Association allocating funds for a statewide traveling police training school
-
In 1959, successfully lobbying the legislature to pass legislation for a volunteer law enforcement training program.
- In 1967, successfully working with the legislature on passage of the mandatory Minnesota Peace Officers Training Law. The law created a training board advisory to the attorney general.
-
In 1977, helping create the Peace Officers Standards and Training Board (P.O.S.T.) which was the first law enforcement licensing system in the United States. It continues to serve as a model throughout the nation. Over the years the MPPOA proudly works on legislation involving P.O.S.T. Not only does P.O.S.T. raise the eligibility requirements of those entering law enforcement, it also enhances the standards, training and professionalism of our police community. Strong confidence in the skill and the character of our peace officers is essential in gaining the public’s trust and the Association continues to work with the P.O.S.T. Board to build and maintain that confidence.
